Downtime and slowness

Thursday, November 10th, 2005

There’s been major slowness over the past few weeks related to intensive software I have installed, sorry about that. And then to top it off on Tuesday the host’s networking fell apart. All should be restored now.

Installed elinks

Thursday, November 10th, 2005

I have removed the text-based browser links and replaced it with another version, elinks. You can still type links to run it. It is mostly the same: the major difference is that it can view secure (SSL) sites.

Webmail fixed

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

There was trouble with webmail for a few days, people logging in would have seen errors like:
open(/var/lib/php4/sess_…, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2)
This should be fixed now, please report any further errors.

Ubuntu 5.10

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

The puzzling.org server is now running the new release of Ubuntu: 5.10 (”Breezy Badger”). For users’ purposes this boils down to having software that is six or so months newer.

Outage July 2 - July 5

Monday, July 11th, 2005

There was an extensive puzzling.org outage from July 2 to July 5. This doesn’t seem to have been related to the Linode hosting problems at all: somehow the puzzling.org server shut down and stayed down. All it needed was manual booting. Unfortunately I wasn’t around (I was diving) from July 2 to July 4 so [...]

Another outage

Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

This one was for reasons fairly similar to the last one, and lasted for an hour, from 6pm to 7pm June 28, Sydney time. Details on the Linode forum: Another TP breaker trip.

Several hour long outage

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

There was a puzzling.org outage from about 6:30pm on June 26 to 1:30am on June 27 (Sydney time). This seems to have been due to the following Linode issues:

ThePlanet power problem
ThePlanet Routing Issues and Hosts Reboots (this was a previous power outage last week, overnight on June 19/20, see it for context)

Mailman

Sunday, June 19th, 2005

I’ve switched back to using Mailman for the puzzling.org mailing lists, rather than Ecartis. The latter had a lot of problems with mails being held for moderation and then not being approvable.

New puzzling site

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

logoscopy.org has been added to the puzzling stable. Well, will be added I’m sure, when Sam is ready.

WordPress 1.5

Friday, April 8th, 2005

I’m upgrading (slowly, painfully) everyone’s installation of WordPress to version 1.5. This will change the layout of some people’s sites, if they had the old green+brown WordPress default look.
I’m not sure whether this will have any further effect on the comment/trackback spam issue, but running the latest version of any given software is usually a [...]

Comment spam

Friday, April 8th, 2005

puzzling.org WordPress installations got a huge whack of comment spam over the last few months, much of which slipped by me unnoticed, sadly. I’m going through and deleting as much of it as I can find, and I’m disabling tracebacks on WordPress setups (I know, about six months after every sensible WordPress admin did).

Hoary Hedgehog

Friday, April 8th, 2005

I’ve just upgraded the system to Ubuntu 5.04: Hoary Hedgehog, which became stable earlier today. I uninstalled a bunch of seemingly useless junk, please let me know if I broke anything.

Long outage Thursday night

Sunday, April 3rd, 2005

There was a long puzzling.org outage on Thursday 31st March/Friday 1st April due to Linode being down. The site came back up early Friday morning. Further details are on the linode forums.

Ooh! Ooh! Ubuntu!

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

I am monstrously sneaky… I discovered that Linode supports Ubuntu 4.10 and I just had to “upgrade”. It’s very weird doing it live, that’s for sure.
Undoubtedly I’ve forgotten something… but now I can use this image:
